Interrelationship of Building and Surroundings: This building is similar in scale and material to the other buildings along lower Broadway; it makes a positive contribution to the street-scape.
Features: The first floor contains two storefronts with inset entrances. An iron girder above the storefronts has decorative floral ornaments covering rivet heads. Two 3 -story oriel windows extend from the second floor to the fourth floor. The second and third floor windows between the oriels have lintels with - hoods. The fourth floor window has a plain rectangular lintel. A heavy wooden cornice unites the oriels and the rest of the facade Windows have 2 -over- 2 double-hung sash. The panes of the lights are horizontal rather than vertical, however.
Architect:
Builder: probably Myers & Bailey
Importance: Myers & Bailey, builders, probably constructed this building in 1847. In 1859, they sold it to the Gortons who owned it until 1892. The Gorton family operated an umbrella store here and lived in the upper floors. After the Gortons sold it to the Brewers, the building was extensively remodelled. It now has the appearance of a late 19th century building. The original des gn may have been Greek Revival.
