Interrelationship of Building and Surroundings: An integral part of the Lower Broadway streetscape, the City Hotel is similar to the William W. Coit Brick Block three buildings to the north.
Features: Above the storefronts, a concrete cornice extends the width of the facade Second and third floor windows are grouped in two sets of five on either side of an isolated center window. Sills are of concrete, lintels of b.rick. 1 -over- 1 double- hung sash is used. Between the second third floors, the bric ork is se[745]in decorative panels in a design resembling a basketweave pattern. Above the third floor is a concrete entablature. The side elevation reveals a stepped gable end. The roof is pierced with two gable-roofed dormers and a shed - roofed dormer.

Importance: The City Hotel was built for the firm of Spalding and Allen, comprised of John W. Spalding of Norwich and Frede.rick Allen of Windham. Later, it was owned by Oliver and Henry Allen, owners of a furniture factory elsewhere in Norwich. Passing through various owners and uses, it became Martin s Hotel in 1922. Although the facade was almost completely rebuilt, perhaps on changing to Martin s Hotel in 1922, the alteration influenced by the Neo -classical Re.vival is approp.riate in its effect on the buil'ding. The original nature of the building is evident by glancing at the side elevation.
